You have purchased the new house and moving day is coming soon. It is an exciting time, but there are many things that still need to be done. Planning is key. The following checklist can be used as a reminder of some important and/or overlooked tasks the must be done to ensure a smooth and successful move:
One Month Before Moving
- GIVE CANCELLATION NOTICES -- day care center,clubs, organizations, volunteer activities, newspaper subscriptions and regular deliveries
- HIRE A STORAGE FACILITY -- check the limits of the insurance offered, make sure the insurance offered covers replacement cost, purchase additional insurance, if necessary
- BANK -- arrange transfer of your accounts, order checks with new address, and clean out your safety deposit box
- MAKE TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS -- hotels or temporary housing, rental cars and/or plane tickets
- GATHER IMPORTANT RECORDS -- school records, pet documents, home sale/purchase papers, wills, marriage/divorce papers,
financial records, stock certificates, birth certificates, social security cards, passports, and so on
- CHANGE OF ADDRESS -- turn in forms at the post office, mail post cards to friends and creditors
- IMPORTANT RECORDS -- contact schools and arrange for transfer of student records, contact doctors for medical records and referrals to new physicians, change insurance policies on property, auto, and medical
Two Weeks Before Moving
- GET YOUR DUCKS LINED UP -- clean out club, gym, and school lockers, pick up all dry cleaning, retrieve and return all borrowed items from friends and neighbors
- PREPARE TO LEAVE YOUR HOME -- schedule the disconnection or changeover of utilities
One Week Before Moving
- CONFIRM MOVING ARRANGEMENTS -- with moving and storage companies, hotel and/or temporary housing accommodations, rental car and other transportation arrangements
- LET PEOPLE KNOW HOW TO REACH YOU -- give friends and relatives your forwarding address
- PACK SURVIVAL BOX FOR MOVE -- paper, pens, address book, stamps, envelopes, aspirin, band-aids, flashlight, children's games, spare car keys, phone books
Moving Day
- CONFIRM MOVING ARRANGEMENTS -- confirm delivery address, directions, and delivery date with movers
- PREPARE YOUR HOME TO BE VACANT -- make sure a relative, neighbor, or real estate agent has the keys, make sure that person knows how to contact you, notify insurance agent and police that the home will be empty
- VACATE YOUR HOME -- clean the home, check thermostat and set temperature appropriately, close and lock all windows and doors,turn off all appliances, leave forwarding address, keys, and garage door opener
Moving In
- WHEN YOU ARRIVE -- check to make sure all utilities are on and working properly, let family members or friends know that you have arrived safely
